‘Tribe’

We shot this in Namibia, with a semi-nomadic tribe known as the Himba.

The Himba don’t have electricity, so we had to tell them what television was so we could tell them what a commercial was, so we could tell them what we wanted them to do. I’m astonished at how naturally they took to performing.

They don’t have money, either, so we paid them in goats and blankets.

After the spot was completed, we sent an assistant with a generator and a monitor back out to their lands to show them how the commercial came out. They didn’t make a single change.
